Sustainability at sulb

Our commitment to a greener future

At SULB, we understand that sustainability is not just a goal but a continuous journey. We are dedicated to aligning our efforts with the Kingdom of Bahrain’s ambitious environmental targets, contributing to a more sustainable future for our industry and our planet.

Our Sustainability Vision

The Kingdom of Bahrain has set a bold vision for a greener future, aiming for a 30% reduction in emissions by 2035 and achieving net-zero emissions by 2060. SULB is committed to playing a pivotal role in this vision, focusing on reducing our carbon footprint across our entire value chain.

Our Carbon Reduction Targets

30% Reduction by 2035

Using 2015 as our baseline, we are committed to reducing our Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions by 30% by 2035. Achieving this target involves overcoming challenges and leveraging breakthrough technologies, policy changes, and market innovations.

Net-Zero by 2060

Our long-term goal is to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060. This target requires significant advancements in green technologies and renewable energy sources, alongside substantial reductions in our carbon emissions intensity.

Strategic Levers for Decarbonization

To meet our 2035 and 2060 targets, we have identified several key strategies:

1

Operational Improvements

Enhancing operational efficiency and reducing cycle times are crucial. We anticipate that various operational initiatives will contribute an additional 10% reduction in carbon emissions, with potential for further acceleration through advanced process tools.

2

Greener Raw Materials

Increasing the use of scrap metal to substitute for Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) is vital. Although local scrap generation is limited, we are exploring new developments such as ship recycling in Bahrain to address this challenge.

3

Cleaner Power Sources

Shifting to renewable energy sources is fundamental to reducing our carbon footprint. We are investing in renewable power capacity to ensure that our operations are powered sustainably.

4

Hydrogen Technology

Integrating hydrogen into our DRI process holds significant potential for emissions reduction. However, this requires the availability of cost-effective green hydrogen and sufficient renewable power.

5

Offsetting Residual Emissions

While striving for net-zero, we recognize that some emissions will be unavoidable. We plan to offset these residual emissions through various mechanisms, aiming for an estimated 10% compensation.

TARGETS

Meeting Our 2035 Target

  • Substituting at least 50% of DRI with scrap metal, which requires addressing the current scrap supply gap.
  • Implementing operational improvements to yield further reductions.

We are optimistic that our combined efforts will surpass the 30% reduction target, potentially reaching a 40% reduction.

Achieving Net-Zero by 2060

  • Transitioning to 100% renewable electricity, which will reduce carbon emissions by 20%
  • Using hydrogen in the DRI process, which could cut emissions by up to 31%.
  • Addressing the cost and availability of green hydrogen and renewables, as well as the challenges of transitioning from natural gas.

While technically impossible to achieve absolute zero carbon emissions due to the nature of steelmaking, we are committed to minimizing our impact and offsetting remaining emissions through robust mechanisms.

Our Commitment

SULB is dedicated to advancing sustainability in all aspects of our operations. Through innovative technologies, strategic partnerships, and unwavering commitment, we aim to contribute meaningfully to Bahrain’s environmental goals and set a benchmark for sustainable practices in the steel industry.
