Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) plant has a designed capacity of 1.5 million tons a year (mty) and is currently running at an annualised rate of 1.6 mty.
Production Facilities
Designed by Midrex Technologies and Kobe Steel Ltd to produce material to the stringent standards required for downstream processing. The facility is able to produce Hot DRI for in-house consumption, and Cold DRI for the market. Utilising state-of-the-art technology, the facility maintains a high level of efficiency, which has enabled it to increase productivity while reducing the consumption of energy and water.
Melt Shop has a design capacity of 0.97 mty and is currently running at an annualised output of 1.1 mty.
The state-of-the-art facility employs EAF technology designed by SMS Concast. This is operated by a team of experienced professionals who ensure the semi-finished product is as per the stringent requirements of our customers. The plant is operated to consistent quality, high safety standards and with minimal environment impact.
Heavy Section Mill is a computer-controlled facility and was developed by SMS Meer as the technology supplier. SMS Meer is regarded as a world-leader in structural steel rolling mills.
It has a designed capacity output of 0.6 mty and produces the widest range of sizes and highest standards in the region.
Light and Medium Section Mill, in Saudi Arabia, producing structural steel for the construction market as beams, channels, angles and flat sheets. It is known for its quality products and is the supplier of choice for customers seeking transmission towers. Receives in-house billet supply direct from the Melt Shop in Bahrain. Production capacity of 450,000 mty.
These levels of operation are achieved despite using natural gas feedstock with 12% nitrogen and 7% carbon dioxide.

Processes
Direct Reduced Iron (DRI)
DRI is a premium ore-based metallic (OBM) raw material made by removing chemically-bound oxygen from iron oxide pellets without melting which makes for an energy-efficient feedstock.
DRI physical and chemical characteristics make it desirable for use in Electric Arc Furnaces (EAF).
The DR Plant is designed to produce both Hot DRI (HDRI) and Cold DRI (CDRI) in any proportion according to the Melt Shop requirements.
Oxide pellets are supplied by the company’s sister operation Bahrain Steel located immediately adjacent to SULB Bahrain.
Many clients across MENA region and South East Asia are satisfied.
